Welded Points

Industrial Instrument of Chicago Illinois asked me to weld these precision balls to hardened Starrett contact points. They use these custom extensions for measuring of the inside diameter of large gears. In the past, they’ve had problems with the welds cracking and their measurements were inaccurate. They wanted the ball to be perfectly concentric with the Starrett contact point. I machined the point down on my lathe and welded the two components together with silicon bronze rod after careful preheating.

These turned out very well and Industrial Instrument was very pleased with the results.
